It is our intention in the following pages to ofi'er some justifica tion for this distrust of the modern school of political economy, by exhibiting the most striking errors into which its writers have fallen and at the same time to put forward, with submission, our own Opinions on some of the important topics which have been so grievously mangled, in the hope of rescuing their study, than which none can be of deeper interest to the welfare of mankind, from the diare ute into which it has of late fallen with a large portion of the worl As we proceed in this task, we think it will appear that the principal wnters on political economy, within the present cen tury, have had but a very indistinct notion of the nature and limits of their subject; that they have habitually employed the same terms in contradictory senses, and so rendered their writings, in a great measure, unintelligible, not only to their readers, but even to them selves; that there is scarcely one of the numerous topics handled by them, such as the laws regarding value, labour, wages, pro ts, rent, and free trade, which they have not left in a worse condition than they found it and finally, that the Whole science, as hitherto understood and carried on, has been founded on an entirely false assumption, which must infallibly either vitiate the whole super structure, or render it, in its present condition, an thin but the trusty and unerring guide in legislation, for whic it as been ostentatiously put forward by its cultivators.
