Description
Most of the Essays here given to the public have appeared in the leading reviews in the course of the past eight years. They are here republished, with additions and alterations, in some instances considerable; and the inci dental references to persons and facts are brought into accord with the date of their present issue. Three of them - the first, fourth, and eleventh - now appear for the first time under the author''s own name, having been originally printed in the Quarterly and Edin burgh Reviews. One - that on the life-work of Cardinal Wiseman, based on a lecture delivered in Cambridge in 1897, - has not hitherto been published.
