However great may be the popularity of the compositions of a writer broken down by suffering long prior to the day when death seized him, it cannot be doubted that his posterity will hold his works in far higher esteem than did his contempor aries. Those who shall in future write the history of music will assuredly give a very exalted rank to one who distinguished himself in his art by so rare a genius for melody, and by such wondrous and graceful expansion Of the resources of harmony; and his triumphs will be far more appreciated than those of many others who covered a larger space, though the works Of the latter may be over and over again played by the full orchestra and over and over again sung by crowds Of prime donne.
