Description

Excerpt from Reading and Rhetoric

It might possibly be objected that I have tampered with the originals. All but the two final selections have been carefully edited to provide a vocabulary that the average international student can be expected to comprehend, and to employ a syntax which avoids some of the more obscure, archaic, or involved Eng lish constructions. In each case I have tried to retain as much of the original as possible. In a very few instances I am afraid that certain characteristics of style have had to be sacrificed in the interests of readability.

Very little fiction has been included. Fiction is one of the most sophisticated literary forms, and students who have difficulty in reading a language should not be exposed first to its most difficult forms. After the student has mastered the mechanics of the lan guage and grasped some of the basic cultural assumptions, then he will be prepared to pursue his reading not only into fiction, but into poetry as well. But in the classroom he will be reading expository prose for the most part. While it may not be the highest literary form, it is at least the most functional, the most common, and the easiest to learn.
