The subject matter contained in this book was. Sug gested by a short story appearing in the Cosmopolitan of March, 1903, entitled The Breed of the West, by J. N. Marchand. The whole of that story, with a few embellish ments, is embodied within the first ten pages, and I hereby acknowledge my indebtedness for the privilege, as well as the personal good wishes of the author thereof.
My one object has been to weave a few ideas into a simple story, told in a manner that may be easily under stood.
