However we may be minded to take our endings it is surely a mistake to take the beginnings of soldiering too seriously, to blaze away at Patriotism to the exclusion of all the other fine, trivial, muddlesome motives that may have gone to the joining up. There was camaraderie, wasn't there, and the sense of fairness P There was duty, love of adventure, the itch to teach the braggart a lesson, the conviction that it wouldn't do to be out of it. Then the desire to prove manhood, and the mere ?ing of it all. For myself I am not sure that the determining factor was not the play ing of national airs fin Trafalgar Square by the band of the Irish Guards on a sunny morning in June.
