Description
In the Domesday book of 1086 the small Warwickshire village of Frankton was recorded as containing two manors. Over the next 800 years one of the manors was owned by a series of families while the second became a property of the Priory of Coventry until the reformation and was then sold to a branch of the Temple family of Buckinghamshire.
The two manors went through phases of cooperation and conflict involving enclosure of the fields, the effects of the English Civil War and the advowson of the church.
Thomas Temple was driven out of the manor by his debts and the incoming Biddulph family were eventually able to combine the two manors. The village enjoyed growth of industry and transport for a time until the whole estate was broken up and sold in the nineteenth century.
This book researches the history of the two manors through their actions and interactions and the impact upon the ordinary people of the village. It looks at how the lords and other residents of this small village were also affected by and involved with events in the rest of the country and beyond. It identifies the remaining evidence visible today from 800 years of history.
