Description
As part of the centenary commemorations, Burbage Heritage Group researched the men in Burbage who were lost in the Great War. The research covered the stories of the fallen, their families and the way in which the village acknowledged their ultimate sacrifice. It became clear that the sixty-four men, had a tremendous impact on a small village, with many intertwined family relationships between many of the men who lost their lives, with poignant stories of parents, wives, children and girlfriends. This book captures some of these stories, together with the way in which their loss was commemorated with a superb marble monument, which has become an iconic part of the village today. Biographical information, war diaries, letters and photographs are brought together to vividly portray their personal stories. The book concludes with the commemorations carried out 100 years later, ensuring the monument and surrounding rose garden, will for all time remember their sacrifice.
