Description
Excerpt from A Pre-Cane Orientation and Mobility Outline for the Parents and Teachers of the Visually Impaired
In basic concept formation and most certainly in the development of body image, it is important to remember that the sighted child is able to recall visual images which aid him in the formation of his basic conception of the environment. He therefore perceives a whole image and later breaks the image into parts. The visually impaired child, on the other hand, does not have these visual experiences to recall and must perceive his environment first in parts and then as a whole. It is these steps of discovery that will be outlined here. Hopefully, these parts will be learned in some type of logical progression to later establish realistic conception of the sighted world.
