Description

Excerpt from Pruning Deciduous Fruit Trees

Adventitious buds are ones produced at unusual points (not leaf axils) on the roots, trunk, or branches. This kind of bud, which occurs frequently on the roots of such fruit plants as the myrobalan plum, gives rise to vigorous shoots called suckers. Similar Vigorous shoots arising from trunks and older branches are commonly called water-sprouts, but these originate primarily from dormant buds.
