The old Greeks had only sixteen letters afterwards the aspirates (p, x, 6 were added, and the double consonants f, 5, 1p, and the long vowels w, which were, previously to this time, expressed in the pronunciation Formerly, says Plato in his Cratylus, we did not use 77, but 6 nor but a: and instead of the diphthong ou they wrote a.
