The compensation between tube and chamber may next be felt very readily, in these protruded varieties of ü, by means of a probe. This is allowed to rest lightly against the inner declivity of the tongue and the distance is easily measured on its stem from the edges of the teeth. In my own case I found that at the point of extreme protrusion the lips had advanced 10 mm.: but the probe had come forward no less than 15 mm. From the standard tubular u'' position. This points to very exact compensation; for the ante-dental cavity is only small, and does not count for much more than the same length of additional tube: and in fact, on making it a matter of direct observation, it did not appear that the resonance of ?, which was determined for the tubular (table VIII) underwent any change worth mentioning during the progressive development of an ante dental cavity.
