Description
Excerpt from Monumenta Orcadica: The Norsemen in the Orkneys and the Monuments They Have Left
After mentioning the numerous alliances entered into in the Middle Ages between Norwegians and Celts, which gives to the Saga of the Islands a pe culiar colour that differs from the Norwegian, the author proceeds to treat of the language of the Islands, which, although entirely English, has preserved a number of idiomatic differences that recall the Norwegian time. The names of places, in particular, especially those of the islands, are thoroughly Norwegian; and on Sanday, the island lying nearest to Norway, the dialect appears to have retained Norwegian words to a still greater extent than on the other islands.
