Johann wolfgang von goethe - One of the world''s greatest men was born in frankfort-on-the-main, Au gust 28, 1749. His great-grandfather was a Thuringian blacksmith, whose son, Goethe''s grandfather, had come to Frankfort to seek his fortune, had married a well-to-do widow and accumulated the wealth that enabled Goethe''s father to lead a life of elegant leisure. The latter had mar ried into a good Frankfort family and occupied a position of social dignity in the little Free City - as Frankfort then was - where there was no court to cast the patrician merchants in the shade.
