The Gujarathi, the Marathi (with its off - shoot the Konkani), and the Uriya, or language of Orissa, idioms which are derived in the main from the decomposition of the Sanscrit, form the vernacular speech of the Hindu population within their respective limits: besides which, and besides the Dravidian languages, various idioms which cannot be termed indigenous or vernacular are spoken or occasionally used by particular classes resident in Peninsular India.
