Excerpt from No Survivors: A Novel
I shall recount nothing further of the death of the Confederacy at Appomattox. Such accounting as has been given, may be re garded as the preface to the real saga of my life, its westward course following my abortive attempt to go home after the surrender.
My sole assets at the outset of the journey west, beyond a per sonal hardihood already described, were my horse and an old, Colt Dragoon revolver. I assume the three of us made something less than a reassuring picture.
Hussein, as the foundation of this dilapidated trio, contributed his full share to our appearance of villainy. A magnificent bay stallion, reputed to carry in his veins, undiluted, the blood of the original Barb, he had been presented to me by my troops after Chickamauga.
