Description

Excerpt from Al Schmid, Marine

This is the story of one Marine, a private in the fighting on Guadalcanal, who killed his share of Iaps, was pro moted and decorated for bravery, lost his eyesight when an enemy grenade blew up in his face, and then fought another battle back to sanity, health and happiness. It is set down just as he told it,'' using his own words, phrases and descriptions, even when they are not quoted - this is Al''s book. He told me in one of our first interviews that he would have liked to write this himself, but gave up the idea because of his eyes. When it was finished he said, That''s what I want - that''s just like me.

Perhaps the thing AI believes most Strongly is that he is no different from any other young American in uni form. He expects no special credit or sympathy for what he did, and he feels no bitterness over his personal tough luck. At the present time he is not blind, but there is less than 5 per cent of normal vision in his one remaining eye. The doctors believe there is a chance that this may improve slightly.
