Munshi Premchand (born Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, July 31, 1880, Lamahi, near Varanasi, India—died October 8, 1936, Varanasi) was an Indian author of novels and short stories in Hindi and Urdu who pioneered in adapting Indian themes to Western literary styles._x000d_Premchand worked as a teacher until 1921, when he joined Mohandas K. Gandhi’s Noncooperation Movement. As a writer, he first gained renown for his Urdu-language novels and short stories. Except in Bengal, the short story had not been an accepted literary form in northern India until Premchand’s works appeared. Though best known for his works in Hindi, Premchand did not achieve complete fluency in that language until his middle years. His first major Hindi novel, Sevasadana (1918; “House of Service”), dealt with the prostitution and moral corruption among the Indian middle class. Premchand’s works depict the social evils of arranged marriages, the abuses of the British bureaucracy, and exploitation of the rural peasantry by moneylenders and officials._x000d_Much of Premchand’s best work is to be found among his 250 or so short stories, collected in Hindi under the title Manasarovar (“The Holy Lake”). Compact in form and style, they draw, as do his novels, on a notably wide range of northern Indian life for their subject matter. Usually they point to a moral or reveal a single psychological truth._x000d_Premchand’s other novels include Premashram (1922; “Love Retreat”), Rangabhumi (1924; “The Arena”), Ghaban (1928; “Embezzlement”), Karmabhumi (1931; “Arena of Actions”), and Godan (1936; The Gift of a Cow).|सामाजिक परिवेश को दर्शाता प्रेमचंद का श्रेष्ठ उपन्यास हिंदी के महानतम साहित्यकारों की सूची हमेशा ही मुंशी प्रेमचंद के नाम के बिना अधूरी रहेगी. इस साहित्य सम्राट द्वारा लिखे गए उपन्यास ग़बन को उनकी सबसे लोकप्रिय रचनाओं में से एक माना जाता है. यह रामनाथ नाम के एक युवक की कहानी है जो नैतिक रूप से कभी स्थिर न रह पाने के कारण जीवन के सभी निर्णयों में कमज़ोर साबित हुआ. अपनी सुन्दर पत्नी जालपा की आभूषणों की चाह को पूरा करने के लिए उसके व्यक्तिगत और आर्थिक दोनों पक्ष बिगड़ने लगते हैं और वह मुसीबतों में फंसता चला जाता है. इस उपन्यास के माध्यम से प्रेमचंद समाज के मध्यवर्ग का सजीव दर्पण प्रस्तुत करते हैं जो क्षणभंगुर दिखावट के लिए बहुत से स्वांग भरता है. इस कहानी में पाप-सम्मत समाज की असलियत भी दर्शाई गयी हैं जिसमें सब कुछ है - चोरी रिश्वतखोरी झूठ फ़रेब हेरा-फेरी विधवाओं की दुर्दशा और ग़बन. कहानी में प्रेमचंद ने समझौता-परस्त और महत्वकांशा से पूर्ण मनोवृति तथा पुलिस के चरित्र को बेबाकी से प्रस्तुत करते हुए कथा को जीवंत बना दिया है. यहाँ पारिवारिक जीवन का मनोविज्ञानिक चित्र भी है तथा नारी की आभूषणप्रियता और पुरुष का आत्मदर्शन भी. मध्यवर्गीय समाज की दुर्बलताओं को पति-पत्नी के जीवन में चरितार्थ करते हुए स्वाभाविक और यथार्थ कथा रची गयी है.
