Der Spitzenabstand, bei dem zwei Spitzen als eine empfunden werden, lässt sich auf drei Arten ermitteln: Entweder beginnt man mit kleiner Distanz und geht allmählich zu grösseren Abständen über, oder man verfährt. Von grossem Abstand aus beginnend, gerade umgekehrt, oder man wendet alternierend grosse und kleine Distanzen an, indem man den Grenzwert von oben und unten immer mehr einengt. Beim ersten Verfahren erhält man die grössten, beim zweiten die kleinsten, beim dritten mittlere Zahlen.
