Through the above-named channels the exotic element made its appearanoe in German literature prior to the nineteenth cen tury. This earlier element can be recognized only as an indirect factor in the history of the exotic novel. During the last years of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century, however, three forces were at work which gave the exotic novel a direct itnpact, and may in reality be considered as its molding factors.
