Description
Excerpt from Trades Described: A Book for the Young
One great reason, probably, why the cultivation of ground is not much attended to in savage coun tries, is, that property is very insecure, and there are no laws to prevent people from robbing one another. And then they have no clear views of what is right and wrong, and care but little about either. So we may suppose that if one of them were to get a taste for gardening, and raise a little fine fruit or a few scarce vegetables, his neighbours would very soon come in and take them away, whether he liked it or not. Such things do happen even in England sometimes.
