Description
Excerpt from The Victoria Nyanza: The Land, the Races and Their Customs, With Specimens of Some of the Dialects
IN presenting to the reader a description of the races inhabiting the shores of the Victoria Nyanza, the most extensive fresh-water basin of Central Africa, exhibiting their customs and usages, their mode of life and their ethnographic relations, I have a twofold object in view to record in detail the results of my observations and the contents of my collections, and to awaken public interest in the most beautiful region of Germany's East African colony, destined at no distant time to play an important part in colonial enterprise. On my numerous excursions and expeditions west, south, and east of the lake, I enjoyed most favourable opportunities of making extensive and valuable collections of all kinds, of gather ing interesting information about the peculiarities of the several races, and of learning a great deal from my own personal observation.
