The notice of each book, generally based on the collation of several copies, is followed by a description of the copy or copies exhibited, and a chronological list of the works in which the book is noticed, those which merely repeat previous descriptions being placed within brackets.
The two last sections Of the Catalogue contain the treatises on music, manuscript and printed, and such of the collections Of sacred and secular music as Iwas able to take notes of before the dispersal of the Collection. I must claim especial indulgence for this portion of my work, which is quite out of the usual range of my studies, and which I should not have attempted had I not been urged to do so by several friends. For the notices of the choral service-books belonging to divers colleges at Cambridge and to Durham Cathedral (part V., Nos. I, 2, 3, and 6 which will probably be found the most valuable of those included in the last section, I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. Owen Dullea. My best thanks are also due to Mr. John W. Bradley, for notes on the miniatures and illuminated ornaments of the Italian manuscripts.
I have finally to apologise to subscribers for the delay in issuing this volume, the greater portion Of which was printed in the earlier part of the spring. Constant and varied occupation have hindered its earlier completion.
