Description
During the 65 years since the author, Bryan K Edgley MBE FRSA, and his wife Alison married and took over the management of Kensham Farm at Cadmore End, Buckinghamshire at Michaelmas 1955 there have been huge changes in farm practice, from hard work by general farm workers assisted by working horses to the highly mechanised and productive methods used by present day specialist arable farmers. These changes have been as great as the changes from sail to steam in shipping.
The author has written his regular column in Clarion V, ‘On the Land’, the quarterly magazine of his local Parish Council, from 2007 to 2020 with its average reader in mind who is not connected with farming. Some of these writings, are reproduced in the several sections of the third chapter. They are not technical articles suitable for other farmers – they are intended for folk who live in rural areas and want to improve their knowledge of what is happening on local farms, how the farming industry works and the concerns, wether technical, weather or political, that are of particular interest to farmers.
In the first chapter photographs of farm work with horse drawn farm machines, and threshing grain from the sheaves with a threshing drum driven by a steam traction engine are reproduced. These early photographic images were taken by the author’s late father over one hundred years ago with a camera which used glass quarter plates, long before the days of autofocus cameras or digital photography, during the period 1912 to 1916. The author has added captions describing those early harvesting methods.
All royalties from the sale of this book will be donated in equal share to The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) and The William Scott Abbott Trust, for furthering its objective of ‘connecting people of all ages and backgrounds to the science, heritage and practical art of agriculture’.
