Description
Excerpt from Sporting Notions of Present Days and Past
Writing on sport which sport devotees read is apt to be found repellent, if not unintelligible, by the non-initiated. Martin Cobbett possessed in a very special degree the art (a perfectly unconscious one no one more surprised than the striker, as he would say) of discoursing on such matters so as to appeal to all classes. It was, of course, in his descriptions of country rambles, such as are collected in Wayfaring N otions, that this charac teristic - perhaps it was his lovableness came out most continually; but in a measure it was the same with all his work, and I have tried to choose out those portions of it which exemplify his faculty of interesting all classes of readers, and specially the Refereaders, who were all his friends.
