He was knighted by the Viceroy, Lord Carlisle, not so much for his high professional reputation, which was European and had been recognized by many countries in Europe, but to mark the Viceroy''s sense of the services he had rendered to Statistical science, especially in connection with the Irish census. In spite of his kindness of heart and his professional ability, he was a man of unbridled passions. He was also no torious for his untidiness. Just after he received his title, an Englishman, newly arrived in Dublin, speak ing of the passage across the Channel remarked that it was the dirtiest night he had ever seen. Father Healy, who heard him exclaimed, Oh, then it must have been wild!
