Excerpt from Letters of Benjamin Hawkins: 1796 1806
This volume contains the writings of Col. Benjamin Hawkins, the United States Agent for Indian Affairs South of the Ohio River, covering a period from 1796 to 1806. The original manu scripts have been in the possession of the Georgia Historical Society for about three-quarters of a century, and as a contribution to the history of Georgia and of the United States the Society now gives them to the public. There are, in all, nine of these volumes, written by Hawkins himself, and one by his secretary, Richard Thomas. They are in the form of bound journals, and the writing is distinct and well preserved.
One of these volumes, entitled A Sketch of the Creek Country, was published for the Georgia Historical Society in 1848, by Mr. Wm. B. Hodgson, and it forms Part I of Volume III of the Society''s collections. This is not included in the present volume. The letters of Richard Thomas, who seems to have been the secretary of Hawkins for a time, are included, as they pertain to the affairs of the Indian Agency.
