These sketchy performances, although favoured with critical praise far beyond their pretensions or deserts, have in some instances been blamed for pungency of. Satire, and in some for a character of levity. To both charges the writer is Willing to plead guilty. The only apology admissible for a fashionable novel, is the successful exposure of vices and follies daily and hourly generated.
