IT is not the purpose Of the writer Of these pages to portray a favorable View only Of those whose claims are here advocated. The dark shades, as well as the light ones, in the character Of the freedmen will be painted; not with a more sombre hue than the facts will justify, nor with a disposition to magnify the faults Of those so recently existing only as brutes, in the eyes Of the law, and Of public opinion South, but with an earnest desire to draw the attention Of the philanthropists Of our Nation, to the absolute necessity Of doing something to remove from our midst the hideous evil here portrayed.
