The following memoirs were written during the last few years of my husband''s life, from 1884 to 1891. They were at first intended only for me and our boy, but he after wards showed them in part to one or two old and dear friends. He never spoke of their publication, and probably would not have thought them worth bringing before the outer world. I think differently, and my h0pe in publishing them is that his name, which was known, and kindly known, in many countries beside his own, may be kept alive a little longer, and that for his sake a friendly hand may sometimes in the future be held out to his boy.
