N preparing these chapters, I have made free use of the complete and learned History of New College by Dr. Rashdall and Mr. Rait (london, F. E. Robinson Co., to which the reader is referred for fuller information, and for references to the authorities; also of Mr. T. F. Kirby's finnals of Winchester College and Winchester Scholars, the Life of William of W yéeham, by the late Rev. G. H. Moberly, and the History of Winchester College, by Mr. A. F. Leach. A very few statements are based upon oral tradition; these have been so far as possible verified. I have received kind help from several friends, but am solely responsible for errors or omissions.
