Description
A funny, heart-warming account of a group of Scouts from a tough neighbourhood in Glasgow.
The great outdoors provided a splash of colour away from their drab and often anti-social housing scheme.
Scouting gave them the self-confidence to take on the world and led to a series of madcap adventures at a time when risk assessment hadn’t been invented!
Troop meetings were initially held in Skipper’s back garden… the camping kit – tents, poles, pegs, cooking pots, big ex-Army dixies, axes and saws – all lived beneath the floor of the kitchen… and this happy gang plodded on with the Pollok version of Scouting for Boys.
One of the boys became Director of Education and secured funding to put 1,000 youngsters through Outward Bound courses every year. All because of the great times he had experienced as a 131 Boy Scout. These kids were from the tough end of society.
“This really is a true Scouting legend”
– Bear Grylls OBE, Chief Scout
