Description
About sixty years ago a boy was born in the city of New York who at an early age became a resident of North em Indiana. Without means, without in?uential friends, with but a common school education, this boy made him self a conspicuous figure in the great formative period of the United States. His career from obscurity to positions of the highest distinction and the widest in?uence, involv ing a sketch of the times in which his lot was cast and the events with which his name must forever be associated, is the subject of this memoir. In its preparation the author has had access to the literary efiects of the dead statesman, as well as to all ordinary sources of information. He has found the story more fascinating than a romance, and trusts that his countrymen will find equal pleasure and profit in its perusal.
