In the following pages I have studiously avoided any reference to him in his capacity as Politician and Statesman. I have confined myself exclusively to reminiscences bearing upon his private life. I decided to record these as far as possible in chrono logical order, rather than to writing them down as they occurred to me. By following the former course I have been able to present a more or less coherent story, and readers will have the advantage of knowing approximately at any given place in the book with what period of his life I am dealing.
