The reader Will soon discover that this is a work requiring no introduction to his attention. Indeed, Whoever catches a glimpse of the attractions of the interior, Will not be disposed patiently to listen to any details intended to detain him on the threshold; and I have, therefore, thought it best to reserve edi torial explanations for the end.
The Publishers did me the honor to place in my hands the manuscript of the Autobiography, and several other documents, Without any restriction on the extent to Which they should be published. The reader is entitled to explanations both as to the na ture and condition of these materials, and the manner in Which I thought it fitting to execute the trust con fided to me. For these explanations I refer to the Supplementary Chapter.
