Ist also das Gotische vielleicht nichts anderes als ein mit ein seitiger Konsequenz weiterentwickeltes Romanisch? Man möchte sich dazu überreden, wenn man sieht, wie jede einzelne gotische Form auf eine romanische Vorform zurückgeführt werden kann, wie ganze Gruppen von Denkmälern, je nachdem man den Standpunkt der Be trachtung wählt, sowohl als gotische wie als romanische angesprochen werden können. Indes enthielte diese Definition immer nur die halbe Wahrheit. Es ist von Anfang an etwas Eigenes und Neues da, das wir den gotischen Gedanken schlechthin nennen müssen, das wie ein Fer ment die gegebene Formenwelt durchdringt und im innersten um wandelt, das über alle Willkür hinaus die Entwickelung auf einen bestimmt vorgezeichneten Weg leitet.
