Maynooth (hotel: Leinster Arms), the seat of the well known Roman Catholic College, is 15 m. From Dublin. The village consists chie?y of one tolerably wide street, at the end of which is the entrance to Carton, the beautiful demesne of the Duke of Leinster, open to the public on week-days at the other end is the royal college OF st. Patrick.
The college is a fine structure with two quadrangles, ex tended and improved in 1846 from the designs of Pugin. It has accommodation for over 500 students. The cloister is a fine' specimen of Early English. The hall is a spacious and beautiful apartment, and there is a large library. The college was insti tuted by the Irish Parliament in 1795 to provide education for candidates for the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church, on account of the difficulty, during the continental wars, of Irish students frequenting the foreign universities. More than half the Roman Catholic clergy of Ireland now receive their education at it. Formerly it obtained an annual parliamentary grant of but at the disestablishment of the Irish Church in 1869 this was commuted by the payment Of a capital sum fourteen times its amount. It is supported also by private donations and bequests, in addition to the entrance fees of the students.
The Castle of Maynooth, adjoining the college, was founded in 1176 by Maurice Fitzgerald, and repaired and strengthened in 1426 by John Fitzgerald, sixth Earl of Kildare. It was taken from Thomas Fitzgerald by Sir William Brereton, in the reign of Henry VIII., but was afterwards restored to the family. The keep and several of the towers still remain, as well as the sur rounding fosse, and betoken it to have been a place of great strength.
