The Manchester Association of Engineers publishes an annual record of meetings, speeches and papers sponsored by the Association throughout the year. Transactions - Manchester Association of Engineers is the 1902 record of activity. It contains several interesting discussions about engineering, all presented with feedback from attendees or letter writers.

The volume begins with the Association president's address, which surveys the world of engineers at the dawn of the 20th Century. He assesses the educational needs and technological challenges that engineers would face in the coming decades. Some of these challenges are addressed in separate chapters. For example, there is a paper about technological changes and new machines. New machinery gave engineers more options, but what to do with those options was the matter of debate. The engineers also debated whether to use electric or rope-driven cranes, as well as the increasing use of giant engines for driving large dynamos, which were then used mostly in power plants. Transactions also includes how-to articles, such as Mr. Wenk's article on how to properly test and measure a lathe for accuracy.

One of the best speeches was by Edward Wood, speaking about the growing rivalry between American and English engineers. Wood makes observations about the difference in infrastructure between the two countries. As for the character of the inhabitants, Wood diagnoses Americans as being obsessed primarily by money and not by service. He praises the English system but believes that English engineers should take more risks like their American cousins. The question and answer session which followed the speech is also transcribed, which makes the text more lively for the reader.

One does not need to be an engineer or even technically-inclined in order to learn things from this book as the prose style is very clear and easy to understand. Of course those interested in civil engineering will very much want to read Transactions, both for the knowledge it imparts about engineering as well as the cultural relevance of the articles.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.

This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
