Description

The purpose of this book is not to keep to the roads but to also take the reader around the many back streets of Derby. And to this end we must be truly grateful to Derby?s ?back street photographer? Charles William Lee. He operated for a short period only, from c.1904 to c.1911 when he produced approximately 200 to 300 sepia photographs mainly of back streets in Derby and its suburbs, but also several of the outlying Derbyshire villages. His studio was at 210 Abbey Street between the Old Spa Inn and Thomas Bell, the shopkeeper. The first two photographs of this introduction are typical of his fine work. These few social history scenes are just a taste of many to come from Derby?s professional and amateur photographers, as like the Mayor and his Coachman we take a trip around Derby?s roads and also its back streets. On this trip we also learn of the many influential industrial and business pioneers of Derby such as Michael Thomas Bass, Henry Boden and Sir Francis Ley, as well as the smaller businessmen with their corner shops who made Derby what it is.
