life-and-voyages-of-louis-jolliet-1645-1700-classic-reprint
Life and Voyages of Louis Jolliet (1645-1700) (Classic Reprint)
Excerpt from Life and Voyages of Louis Jolliet (1645-1700)

The present book 15 a condensation of ten articles published between July 1944 and October 1946. In the bibliography the titles of these articles are asterisked.

In condensing these articles, the follow1ng procedure has been adopted. All the biographical data have been kept. The account of the expedition of 1673 (chapter Six), by far the most important of Jolliet'' 3 three great voyages for which we have evidence, is based on six of the above-mentioned articles. For a detailed discussion of many moot points concerning the discovery of the Mississippi, the reader is referred to the arti cles themselves; only the conclusions have been set down in this book. In the course of these articles, I have noted more than once that because Marquette''s journal and that of Jolliet are lost, anyone wishing to study the voyage of 1673 must of necessity begin by carefully analyzing the few primary sources which we possess. The attempt to write an account of the discovery of the Mississippi on any other basis will certainly have the following result: either a mere repetition, with the usual literary frills, of what has been in print for the past two hundred years, or an elaboration of theories which are quite unsupported by the meager evidence available.

The matter of Chapter Two, in which is ascertained what was known in Canada about the Mississippi prior to 1673.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
