Description
This short novel, written by English historian and medievalist, Antonia Gransden, has as its backdrop the momentous events in English history in the war between England and Scotland during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307). The English are led by the heroic but ageing King Edward, the Scots by Robert Bruce (King of Scotland 1306-1329).
The story concerns the crisis in a man's life. Brother Thomas is a canon of the small Augustinian priory at Lanercost, situated in Cumbria close to the Scottish border. He falls in love with Margery whom the kind-hearted Queen Margaret has taken under her protection. This is a story of love and commitment against a background of murder, rape and arson which was a way of life in the border country. It tells of monastic life and the extreme measures taken to secure funds for the priory, which relied on the wool trade for most of its income.
