inks-classic-reprint
Inks (Classic Reprint)
Excerpt from Inks

We may never know what was first used for writing ink. It may have been the juices of berries, or perhaps the colored earths that were stirred up with water and used as war paint.

About years before the Christian Era the Chinese are said to have begun to make what is usually called India ink, by mixing soot with a solution of glue or of a plant gum. This pasty mixture was made into cakes which were dried. When some ink was needed for writing, the end of the cake was rubbed with water in a shallow dish. The nature of this ink made it necessary to write with a brush.

This circular has been written for the benefit of those who want to know something about inks and how to make them. The greater part of it is devoted to formulas and directions for making writing, hectograph, stamp-pad, recording, marking, and other inks. Print ing ink and other inks that depend upon pigments for their color and their special properties are discussed, but no formulas are given for them.

The intent has been to give such detailed directions in most cases that any careful person will be able to make satisfactory ink. He may make a quart or less for his own use, but before he starts to produce ink on a commercial scale, as a newcomer in the field. He will be wise if he first considers the cost of establishing a profitable business, selling a cheap article with an unfamiliar label.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
