So many things hap pen to bias our opinions, and vitiate our taste, that the strongest resolutions of impartiality will prove insigni ficant, unless we be carefully guarded against those temptations, whereby men are not only daily surprised, but, as it were, driven, into errors and mistakes. Igno rance, education, religion, passion, and party-dis putes, are in a kind of confederacy toseduce mankind. Under their in?uences, we become both writers and readers, and place ourselves on the bench of judges; though, for the most part, but very indi?''erently qua lified. Three things are required to complete the character of a judge - authority, skill, and integrity. Without authority, his sentence is void; without skill, it is rash; and without integrity, it is''unjust. I will not dispute the common right of opining, where nature seems to have given a general commission: but the other two qualifications are frequently wanting.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
