    'Father of modern Yoga' dies

Published on 22/08/2014 by David Birkett

It was sad to mark the passing, at 95 years old, of B. K. S. Iyengar, who did so much to popularise the practice of Yoga in both India and the West. Iyengar began his teaching in Pune, India, where his pupils were to include violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Elisabeth, Queen of Belgium, to whom Iyengar taught sirsasana (head stand) when she was 80. Menuhin encouraged Iyengar to travel to and teach in Paris, London and Switzerland, and his influence spread from there throughout the world. Iyengar’s legacy embraces both particular forms of Yogic practice and aspects of the associated philosophy; in his own words: ‘So many seek this greater Truth in the heavens, but it lies much closer than the clouds. It is within us and can be found by anyone on the Inward Journey’.
