The Great British Book Shop web-site and services are provided by Copytech (UK) Limited, with registered offices at 9 Culley Court, Orton Southgate, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, PE2 6XD, United Kingdom. In these conditions “The Great British Book Shop, “we, “us” or “our” shall be construed accordingly.
We may amend these Terms and Conditions at any time by giving you notice either by email or by posting of the amended Terms and Conditions on our website (www.thegreatbritishbookshop.co.uk).
Please read these Terms and Conditions carefully. By using this service you signify your agreement to be bound by these Terms and conditions. These Terms and Conditions operate within the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.
The Great British Book Shop www.thegreatbritishbookshop.co.uk specialises in the sale of print books, eBooks and related merchandise and stationery products. If you submit an order to us via this site by clicking ‘Submit Order’, your order is an offer to us to buy the goods on our website under these Terms and Conditions.
We will send you an automatically generated e mail accepting your order. The contract will relate to only those goods which are referred to in our e mail confirmation of acceptance of your order. You should read and check these details carefully to ensure that they are correct. If the details are not correct, please contact us immediately via email.
The contract language is English.
Information displayed on the website relating to availability is subject to change without notice. We cannot guarantee permanent or continuous availability of all products on this site. All orders are subject to availability at all times.
Should the print, stationery or merchandise goods that The Great British Book Shop delivers be defective, damaged, not what you ordered, or of incorrect quantity then you have a statutory right to cancel with refund of monies paid. You must notify us in writing within fourteen (14) working days after receiving your goods, beginning with the day after receiving your goods. Unless you notify us in writing within seven working days of receipt of goods The Great British Book Shop will hold no liability. Upon notifying The Great British Book Shop under this condition our only obligation will be to supply any shortfall of goods on a delivery or non-delivery, to replace or repair faulty or damaged items; or to refund you the amount paid for the goods in question to the original method of payment.
The Great British Book Shop will where possible ensure that the availability of The Great British Book Shop services will be un-interrupted and remain error-free. Due to the nature of the internet this cannot be guaranteed but we will do our utmost to restrict access for repairs, maintenance or site updates infrequently and for short durations. It is your responsibility to implement appropriate IT security safeguards (including anti-virus checks) to satisfy your particular requirements as to the safety and reliability of using the website.
The Great British Book Shop does not warrant that the material on the website is completely accurate and will have no liability in respect of such material. Information regarding goods and their availability is subject to publisher information and stock levels.
The Great British Bookshop does not support censorship, however we do reserve the right to de-list from the site material which we deem offensive or in breach of any of the laws of England and Wales.
Nothing in these terms will affect any liability we have: (a) fraudulent misrepresentation; (b) for death or personal injury arising from our negligence; (c) under Part 1 of the Consumer Protection Act 1987; (d) for breach of any condition as to title or quiet enjoyment of or in relation to any goods supplied by us; (e) in relation to any other liability, including any liabilities under sale of goods or supply of services legislation, that may not be by applicable law excluded or limited.
The Great British Book Shop operates a complaints procedure. Any complaint should be made in writing to our Customer Services Department: Customer Service Department, The Great British Book Shop, C/O Copytech (UK) Ltd, 9 Culley Court, Orton Southgate, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, PE2 6XD, United Kingdom. We aim to respond to a complaint in writing within 28 days.
All content included in and made available through The Great British Book Shop, such as images, text, logos, graphics, icons, electronic downloads, multimedia or audio content is the property of The Great British Book Shop or our content suppliers and is thus protected by all applicable national and international trademark service marks, copyright and other intellectual property laws, rules and regulations. You may not extract or re-use any content from The Great British Book Shop for any reason without express written consent from The Great British Book Shop. You understand that copying, mining or extracting data or content found on The Great British Book Shop or downloaded through The Great British Book Shop, for any reason or purpose, without permission from its owner, may constitute an infringement of intellectual property law(s) or regulations.

The Great British Bookshop uses all reasonable endeavours to reflect the most accurate information regarding book prices at all times. Goods are supplied at the publishers recommended retail price (RRP) except where a specific discount is offered. We make every effort to ensure our pricing is correct at the time of sale but on occasion publishers may raise the price of their book without notice. In this circumstance we reserve the right to check with you before despatch to see if you are happy to pay a differing price or offer a full refund where necessary should you wish to cancel your order. We cannot guarantee our ability to supply any particular book.
All prices are displayed in pounds sterling (£) on our website and are inclusive of any relevant VAT. The breakdown of VAT can be seen in your shopping cart before purchase. By committing to purchase you are agreeing to pay the price of the goods which may include a differing VAT rate dependent on country of consumption of the goods supplied.
The Great British Book Shop does offer discount code redemption on some of our goods supplied. Should the item being purchased already be on sale additional discount will not be applied.
Discount codes are not applied when using a gift card to purchase any goods.
Discount codes cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer provided by The Great British Book Shop or any other third party cashback offer.
To redeem your discount enter your discount code exactly as it appears in the box marked ‘voucher code’ on the shopping cart page.
Any discount offered purely applies to the retail price of items in the basket and excludes any additional costs such as postage and packaging. Should you change the items in your shopping cart, the discount will be recalculated accordingly.
Unless stated otherwise, all book, stationery or merchandise prices displayed on The Great British Book Shop are inclusive of UK VAT at the current rate. Delivery cost will be notified to you separately before placing your order at the check-out area of the website.
All eBooks are charged VAT at 20%. Under EU VAT legislation eBooks are not subject to reduced-rate VAT and therefore the standard VAT rate will apply.
Please note that from 1 Jan 2015 the VAT laws on eBooks will change and VAT in the ‘consumption’ location will be charged. At that time, if you have purchased an eBook your purchase price may differ depending on the VAT rate that applies to your location (‘consumption location’). Where a different VAT rate is applied by The Great British Book Shop it will be declared at checkout upon entering of your book download destination. In order to determine the applicable VAT rate for charging you will be asked additional questions prior to purchase so that we can establish your ‘consumption’ location for tax purposes.
If you feel that you have been incorrectly charged VAT on the transaction you may request a VAT refund after despatch. Proof of your locality will be required.
2.1.1 VAT Distance Selling Regulations
To ensure compliance with current VAT distance selling regulations, we charge the applicable VAT rate for any country for which we exceed the distance selling threshold. These currently include: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Sweden.
If you require further information on VAT distance selling rules please contact your relevant VAT authority who can provide specific advice for your locality.
For customers ordering goods for delivery outside of the EU please be aware your order may be subject to import duties and taxes which are levied once the good reach the country of destination. It is accepted that The Great British Book Shop has no control over any such additional charges in relation to customs clearance and all such charges must be paid by you, the customer. Please check with your local customs office if you would like further information on import duties and custom charges for your locality.
We commit to store securely, any information given to The Great British Bookshop and assure customers that information is not accessible to others. The Great British Bookshop will not circulate any data to anyone outside of The Great British Bookshop, the Copytech (UK) Limited Group or affiliated partners without express permission. Where goods you order are not available as ‘in stock’ items and we have to order it from a publisher, wholesaler or distributor we will need to transfer ordering details only to the third party to allow us to fulfil the order.
The Great British Bookshop uses Sage Pay encryption to ensure the highest levels of security are enforced around our payment and order processes so that your personal information and payment details are kept secure. This information is protected by the Data Protection Act 1998 and complies with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards and Regulation 4 of the Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012.
You have a statutory right to a refund on book, merchandise and stationery products if for any reason you are unhappy with these products purchased from The Great British Book Shop. You must notify us in writing within the ‘cooling off’ period of fourteen (14) working days of receiving the goods, beginning the day after you receive the goods. You must return your purchase to us and are entitled to a refund of the purchase cost of the goods under the conditions below.
You must notify us in writing, via your account page of your ‘cancellation’ of your order and return the goods to us within 21 working days of the delivery of your order.
You will then be given a refund of the cost of your goods (and any original postage costs you incurred, if applicable), providing the goods returned are in their original condition and you have taken reasonable care of them whilst in your possession. By including a copy of the original receipt or delivery note this will speed up the processing of your return in our systems. Any cost (return cost) incurred to post the goods back to us will not be refunded to you and is your sole responsibility.
Where we have supplied a substitute product as the goods you originally ordered were unavailable, in such cases you will be refunded the cost of returning the goods on evidence of returned postage receipt.
If we delivered the item to you in error or the item is damaged or defective then the cost of return will be met by us and must be accompanied by a return postage receipt.
Purchased eBook titles cannot be returned, refunded or exchanged. Please be aware that you lose your right to cancel your contract for these services during the cooling off period once we have commenced activation of the electronic download to your device.
If you experience difficulties downloading your purchased eBook please contact our Customer Services team who will assist you. When purchasing electronic goods you should ensure that you have the appropriate hand held reader for the electronic format you have downloaded. The Great British Book Shop accepts no liability for electronic product downloaded on to an incorrect device.
We deliver the goods ordered by you to the address you provide at the time you create your order on our website. Delivery will be made in accordance with the information on the order pages at the time of placing the order. We are not liable for any delay caused by the unavailability of you to accept the delivery. If there has been a delivery attempt made it will be your responsibility to contact the post office or courier company as soon as possible to arrange collection or re-delivery.
Delivery times are estimated and dependent on availability, printing processes, third party stock dates and delivery companies. For our Standard FREE UK delivery service you should allow up to seven (7) working days for delivery from the date you receive your order dispatch confirmation email. For an order being delivered outside of the UK please allow up to twenty-one (21) working days for delivery. Please note that there may be a seasonal variant to these standard times pending postal and courier service workloads. The Great British Bookshop will not be liable for any postal disruption outside of its control.
In the event that a despatched item(s) is delayed or assumed lost in transit we cannot offer to replace or refund until:
- 10 business days after despatch if the item was sent via ‘standard’ post within the UK
- 20 business days after despatch if the item was sent via ‘standard’ post to the EU or Europe
- 25 business days after despatch if the item was sent via ‘standard’ post to Rest of World.
The Great British Book Shop will hold no liability or responsibility to you unless you notify us within a total of 30 days of the date on which the goods were dispatched to you.
If you notify a problem to The Great British Book Shop, in writing or via e mail, under this condition we will rectify a shortage on delivery or replace or repair any goods that are damaged or faulty; or refund to you the amount paid by you for the goods in question to the original payment method.
We reserve the right to cancel the contract between us if, for example:
- We have insufficient stock to supply your order within 30 days
- We do not deliver to your area or country
- One or more of the goods you ordered was listed at an incorrect price due to typography errors or an error in the pricing information received by us from our third party suppliers
You become the owner of the goods you have ordered when we have received cleared funds in full payment for the goods. Once goods have been delivered to you they will be held at your own risk and we will not be liable for loss, damage or destruction.
Every effort will be made to carry out purchase requests and delivery of goods but The Great British Book Shop shall have no liability to you for any failure to deliver goods you have ordered or any delay in doing so, or defect or damage caused in delivery that is caused by any event or circumstance beyond its reasonable control, including, without limitation, strikes, lock-outs and any other industrial disputes, breakdown of systems or network access, flood, fire, explosion.
These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with English Law and subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
