Foxyloxy, as she named ''her'' fox, became a part of Louise''s family. And when her new protegee grew up and had a family of her own, Louise was able to follow every stage of the process and make friends of the cubs too; they even became TV stars. Some 178 acres (73 hectares) have been designated by Natural England as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), because of the quality of its chalk grassland. The Downs, managed by the National Trust, provide panoramic views over the Vale of Aylesbury and along the Chiltern ridge, including classic views of Ivinghoe Beacon. A modern visitor centre, the Chilterns Gateway Centre, is located atop of the Downs, alongside an unusual 'wind-catcher'. Historical monuments on the Downs include the Five Knolls, a group of round barrows, and the Robertson Memorial. The nearby village of Whipsnade has a unique Tree Cathedral and the extensive acres of Whipsnade Zoo. The National Trust manages the Downs to encourage delicate wild flowers, which thrive on the thin chalky soils. The display of orchids in May and June is stunning. Sightings of red kites flying above the Downs are increasingly common. They must share the skies with gliders, launched from the London Gliding Club at the foot of Dunstable Downs, and paragliders and hang gliders, which make use of the updraught on the western slopes of the Downs. Dunstable Downs is widely used by walkers, joggers, cyclists and horse-riders and is a beauty-spot, where people come to look at the views, enjoy picnics, exercise dogs or fly kites. The National Trust organises family events on the Downs, including the annual Kite Festival, while Regiment Fitness holds Warrior Adrenaline Races, in which competitors run over a 5-km or 10-km hilly and muddy course on the Downs. In Dunstable Downs through the Seasons, local photographer John Bishop presents photographs covering the landscape, nature and activities on the Downs throughout the four seasons of the year.

The English Love Affair with Nature tells the story of this extraordinarily long, tangled and passionate romance, how we fell in love, and why we are still mad about nature.

Over the last eight years I have spent much time looking into some really important questions: why do we have a climate and how has it changed? what role has the human race played in these changes? what will be the consequences if we continue burning fossils fuels? can we produce enough renewable, carbon neutral energy for the future, allowing for an increase in world population and for economic growth? The challenge - if we are to limit the long term global temperature rise to just 1°C above the current level, then we need to take urgent action. By 2050 the world must be producing seven times the amount of renewables we use today . This means that over the next 35 years we will have to develop these sources of energy 12 times faster than we've done in the last 35 years. We have to act now - this is our wake-up call. Getting governments to adopt policies with long term benefits is always difficult when they involve major short term investment but getting international agreement on limiting global warming is crucial. National targets must be agreed as well as an effective means of monitoring and enforcing them. Agreement must be based on the long term interests of the world not just on what is best “now, for me”. Seven countries, China, USA, India, Russia, Japan, Canada and South Korea plus the EU account for three quarters of current greenhouse gas emissions. Negotiations must begin by getting these parties to agree on targets for themselves. Warder in his excellent work on apples, says: Every orchard planter who examines the extended varieties of fruits presented to him in the books and by the nurserymen, must feel greatly embarrassed when he comes to select the varieties for hi own orchard. Almost every one in the long lists is recommended for some good quality, and the number of best which he is apt to conclude is indispensable to him, is wonderfully large. Some persons are bewildered by the array presented in the catalogue, and fall back upon their own slender stock of information, selecting only one well known variety; but most persons commit a far greater fault by attempting to grasp all the varieties that are offered and commended.

Our descriptive list herein given embraces many of the best and most of the popular varieties known, and although a complete list of those given might run into too great a variety for profit, yet a well-selected assortment taken from the varieties given should be a most profitable one for any planter. While we take the greatest pains to have all of our nursery stock true to label, and hold ourselves in readiness upon proper proof to replace all stock that may prove untrue, or refund the amount paid, it is mutually agreed between the purchaser and ourselves that we shall not be liable for any sum greater than that originally received for said stock direct from planter.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Another and larger group advises the practice of light to moderate pruning with claims of equally satisfactory results. A considerable and increasing number recommends confining pruning treatment to the cutting out of dead wood, interfering branches, and vigorous sucker shoots, with results that are stated-to be all that could be desired.

The divergency of Opinion among growers of citrus fruits con cerning pruning is so remarkable as to warrant a brief analysis of its causes. The almost total lack of experimental data on this subject is partially responsible for the situation. The main contributing factor, however, has been the in?uence exerted by individual pruners here and there, who through observation and experience have developed rather definite systems. Through long use or the dominant personality of their originator certain of these have become well established in standard orchard practice. Citrus tree pruning practice in California has been developed largely ou-the basis of mechanical procedure rather than as a result of an understanding of the principles involved.

To the average grower, pruning is a purely mechanical operation, consisting of the removal of certain parts of the plant in varying amounts, usually practiced simply as a matter of custom. Of recent years a wholesome tendency to question the value of pruning has developed, with the result that a considerable number of growers have discontinued the practice until proof of its necessity shall be brought forward. The fact remains, however, that few growers have given the pruning problem more than a very superficial study, the majority confining their efforts to the attempt to master some purely mechanical system which is being used with reported success elsewhere.

Pruning is an operation which must be regarded as having a profound in?uence on the vital activities of the plant. Satisfactory results cannot reasonably. Be expected to follow mere perfunctory or mechanical cutting out of parts of the tree. No operation is less speculative in its results than good pruning, or more quickly and certainly productive of good results, enhancing not only the profits but the pleasure of horticulture. On the other hand, unskilled pruning or neglect of pruning causes mischief that cannot be repaired, and undoubtedlyreduces the annual produce of orchards and cottage gardens to a degree which must in many cases extinguish all chance of profit. To those who have little interest in our home woods and their resources, such a statement may appear strange; and all the more so as it is universally admitted that Oak and Ash timber of native growth are superior in lasting properties to any that has been sent from abroad, and that native Birch and Beech are quite equal to foreign importations, While several of our coniferous woods, when matured and seasoned, have been found of the greatest value for general constructive purposes.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
