Description
The noble and commanding figure of Co lumba, the founder of the famous monastery of Iona in the Sixth century, stands more clearly outlined than any other against the dim back ground of early Scottish Christianity. Not that the great Irish saint was even amongst the earliest of those missionaries who laboured with varying success to bring the fierce inhabitants of ancient Caledonia under the gentle yoke of Christ, nor that in his own day and generation he toiled alone in that part of the Lord''s Vineyard. But he was more fortunate than either his predecessors or his contemporaries both in the lasting effect of his work, and in the trustworthiness of those records of it and of himself which have come down to us.
