Description
The investigation itself revived memories which had almost faded from my mind, and I was surprised at the distinctness with which scenes inci dents, and words were recalled. Had I not embodied the information collected, and recorded my own recollections, the incidents in Mrs. Rus sell''s life would perhaps have been forgotten by this generation, or vaguely remembered among the traditions of the country. Most of the letters and papers Of Mrs. Russell and my parents were lost by the burn ing of the houses in which they were stored, and many Of those saved from the ?ames were destroyed by Federal soldiers.
The result Of this labor of love is now submitted to the public under a deep sense Of its meagerness and many imperfections, but with the hope and prayer that it may awaken in the heart of some pilgrim of earth a desire to imitate the example Of this Christian woman.
