    Telephone lines

Published on 03/10/2014 by David Birkett

A curious addition to the ‘pop-up’ phenomenon has manifested itself in a phone-box in Oxfordshire.  (Our younger readers may wish to run the phrase ‘phone-box’ through a search engine).  Robert Seatter, a Brightwell-cum-Sotwell poet who also happens to be head of BBC History, is working with local schools to produce and display phone-box-inspired poetry.  Seatter is quoted on the BBC Oxford News website as saying: ‘Just stepping into that telephone box reminded me of all the past words that once filled it, from garrulous chat to illicit kisses’.  The poems include ‘a bitter answerphone love poem’, and an evocation of ‘the strangely beguiling netherworld of a party line’.  These Oxon villagers are obviously both creative and versatile, as the box has previously hosted exhibitions of local art and photography.
