    Serious comics

Published on 16/06/2014 by David Birkett

If anyone remained in need of persuasion that the world of grown-ups has whole-heartedly embraced comics (aka graphic novels), the major exhibition at The British Library should provide the clinching evidence. Comics Unmasked runs until 19 August, and its journey through illustrated story-telling takes in such wildly diverse areas as medieval manuscripts, 19th-century illustrated reports of Jack the Ripper and current icons including Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman. Fans of a certain pointy-eared cowled avenger may be entertained and informed by a splendid blog series currently running on the Comic Book Resources site, which is counting down the 75 best writers who have plunged The Dark Knight into various surreal, sinister and exciting scenarios.
